Curbing Your TV Addiction
I have a problem. I’m addicted to TV. And it’s gotten even worse since I got to college, especially with the convenience of Netflix and Hulu.
The temptation is so real. And who can blame me? With seemingly hundreds of responsibilities to worry about that you don’t even know where to start, it’s pretty easy to just binge watch your favorite show on Netflix and get engrossed in a fantasy world for a few hours.
But when does your love of TV turn into an addiction? Is it really healthy to binge watch an entire series in a night when you have an exam tomorrow that you should be studying for? I mean, probably not, but that hasn’t stopped me before. So how can I (and others like me) curb this addiction to still lead a productive life?
Well, I have a couple ideas, but I haven’t exactly put them into practice yet.
Don’t watch TV while you’re eating.
Usually my excuse for watching TV is that there’s nothing else I can be doing when I’m eating. And this is normally true. But watching TV while eating wastes valuable time — especially if you watch an hour-long show while eating something that takes you 10 minutes. It might be more meaningful and productive if you take that time to unplug (literally and figuratively) and reflect on your day so far. You’ll likely feel more at peace and won’t be tempted to turn that one TV episode into two.
Get the important stuff done first.
I know, I know, a whole lot easier said than done. But just think of watching an episode of your favorite show at the end of the day as a reward for getting all that work done. Being brave enough to start on that mountain of work is the hardest part, but hopefully once you start, you’ll find that it wasn’t as hard as you thought it would be, and you’ll feel a great deal better.
Remember: Once you know and admit you have a problem, it becomes much easier to solve that problem.
